The journey will be led by Judi Wineland, an inspiring entrepreneur herself, co-owner of AdventureWomen, which she operates with her two daughters, Erica Landerson and Nicole Wineland-Thomson.  In 1978, Wineland was one of the first women to launch and run an adventure travel company, Overseas Adventure Travel. A few years later, she founded Tanzanian safari operator Thomson Safaris with her husband, Rick, and subsequently created Thomson Treks, Thomson Family Adventures and Thomson Collection, which was sold to Lindblad Expeditions Holdings in early 2024.

AdventureWomen guests will travel seamlessly from country to country aboard private aircraft. The Embraer-EJR-135, powered by Rolls-Royce engines, ensures rapid, safe, and long-distance travel, while also efficiently managing shorter trips. Small Group Travel is Better for Local Communities

Many travel industry professionals have been watching closely as the backlash against tourism intensifies in Europe. The latest news out of Barcelona showed frustrated locals targeting tourists with water guns in an attempt to reclaim their city and affordable housing. This followed the ban of cruise ships in both Amsterdam and Venice in 2023. The result: the cruise lines diverted their ships to smaller cities, frustrating the locals in towns like Trieste in Italy.

One solution to this increasing problem is to support small group travel. AdventureWomen, a women-owned and operated travel company based out of Massachusetts, offers tours all over the world with group sizes no larger than 15. Other than trips to the Arctic and Antarctica where small ship travel is not possible, AdventureWomen does not host groups on any large cruise ships. AdventureWomen, a 2022 and 2024 winner of Travel + Leisure’s Best Tour Operator, believes in what they’ve been doing for the past 40+ years.

“Small group travel not only reduces the strain on local communities, but it also allows for more immersive and authentic travel experiences. Our travelers can connect more deeply with the places they visit, fostering mutual respect and understanding between tourists and locals,” says Paige Davis, President of AdventureWomen.

AdventureWomen has a variety of exciting upcoming trips designed to offer unique and intimate experiences. Explore the stunning landscapes and wildlife of Costa Rica, delve into the rich cultural heritage of Japan, trek through the majestic Himalayas in Nepal, or experience the vibrant traditions and ancient ruins of Peru. Recently announced is a one-of-a-kind journey where guests will connect with inspiring female entrepreneurs across Western Europe while enjoying the luxury and convenience of private aircraft travel. Like all of their trips, this journey is limited to only 15 guests. Every AdventureWomen trip is meticulously planned to ensure minimal impact on local communities while providing unforgettable adventures for travelers.

Breaking Barriers: Women Traveling While Caregiving
Survey reveals caregiving challenges

Self-care. Work-life balance. Personal wellness. These are the mantras women are reminded of regularly: this seemingly unattainable balance of achieving professional success and personal growth while finding enough time to care for children, aging parents, and pets. Sociologist Arlie Hochschild popularized the term “second shift” to refer to the household and caregiving duties that follow the day’s work — most often shouldered by women.

At AdventureWomen, a business founded on the principle of women achieving that balance and finding time for self-care and wellness, we aimed to find out just how hard this was, and so we surveyed our guests and this is what we learned.

While many household chores have achieved a more balanced split between couples in a relationship, caregiving (the act of regularly looking after a child or a sick, elderly, or disabled person) still remains largely the responsibility of women. Women reported that in addition to caring for children, they are caring for: pets, parents, spouses, siblings, in-laws, and grandchildren.

“My children were adults when I started solo traveling. It was still difficult, for them, not me! No matter how much you do to make sure everyone is taken care of while you’re away, anything can happen. You just have to be flexible and confident.”
— Lynn W.

Our survey revealed that 43% of women have taken time for themselves, specifically to travel, while having primary caregiving responsibilities. In fact, 30% of respondents told us that they traveled solo leaving a child under the age of 5 in the care of a spouse, partner, family member, or friend.

“I did everything I could to prepare my family for my absence. The hardest part was finding a babysitter who could come early in the morning to take my daughter to school. But we’ve found that when one parent is away, children tend to step up and act more responsibly and be generally more helpful around the house. So it’s really a learning opportunity for everyone.”
— Dara L.

The key factors that contributed to a woman’s ability to take time to themselves were:

  • Financial stability (76%)
  • Family support (48%)
  • Flexible work schedule (31%)

The emotional toll that caregiving can take is not something easily captured in a survey. Nyla H., who is the primary caregiver for an adult daughter with complicated medical needs, told us:

“It’s easy to lose ourselves in the needs of others…it isn’t healthy to be a martyr, and I need to recharge to be able to show up for the people who depend on me. I try to be intentional with friends and plan well in advance, so I always have something to look forward to. I am diligent about staying connected to friends.”
— Nyla H.

For women in particular, the pandemic provided a unique opportunity: the increase in workplace flexibility allowed more people (not just women) to serve as caregivers. When asked for more specific ways that travel became easier for caregivers since 2020, responses mostly centered around someone else being able to step into their role: “husband willing to keep things stable;” “found a sitter for my pets;” and “supportive spouse.”

Arlis M. is a caregiver for her husband, who suffered a stroke in 2019, as well as her parents who are 88 and 89 years of age. She relies on her brother to step in while she takes much needed and deserved respite.

“As caregivers and people who love to travel, my brother and I plan our trips so that one of us is always available. Honestly though, the hardest part of travel is re-entry. It’s like a rocket coming back to earth.”
— Arlis M.

Based on the survey results, women have not only heard the call for self-care, but they are taking the leap to make it happen. The benefits are clear to them. 86% of respondents cite “self-care” as their primary motivator for solo travel, and 69% said that solo travel is “very important” to personal growth and well-being.

“I was very lucky to have a supportive family when I left my parents in their care. Otherwise I would not have been able to go. It was critical to my well-being to go away and come back refreshed and reinvigorated.”
— Sue J.

“Most people don’t talk about the loneliness of caregiving. I never say no to the offer of a helping hand. Being a caregiver means giving up my time and becoming isolated. This is nothing but a recipe for getting sick yourself. You can’t caregive when you’re sick.”
— Arlis M.

There is still room for improvement. Women are seeking out shorter trips, assistance with booking flights, tour pacing that includes downtime, and reassurance about traveler/group safety. One guest told us she chooses AdventureWomen over other tour companies because she knows that “AdventureWomen takes care of us, and that gives comfort to the people we take care of.”

In Italy, the journey continues to an all-female winery founded by a pioneering businesswoman. The final stop in Greece includes a stay at Euphoria Retreat, Europe’s premier wellness destination spa hotel. This sanctuary was created by Marina Efraimoglou, a former investment banker whose personal journey through cancer inspired her to build this haven of well-being.

The itinerary is brimming with enriching experiences, including visits to Siena, Perugia, and Monemvasia. Guests will enjoy wine tastings, a cooking class, and the option of a hot air balloon ride, all while immersing themselves in the local culture and history.

Travel hassles are a thing of the past on this trip, as guests seamlessly travel from country to country aboard their private aircraft. The Embraer ERJ-135, powered by Rolls-Royce engines, ensures rapid, safe, and long-distance travel, while also efficiently managing shorter trips. With a seating capacity of up to 30 passengers, it is ideal for group travel, offering each guest a window seat to enjoy breathtaking views. The aircraft is equipped with a minibar and cold catering, ensuring a comfortable and luxurious travel experience.

AdventureWomen’s private plane journey is more than just a trip — it’s a celebration of women, by women, for women. Join us on this inspiring adventure and create unforgettable memories while supporting and connecting with remarkable women across Europe.

AdventureWomen Awarded Best Women’s Travel Company by Newsweek

AdventureWomen has been recognized as the Best Women’s Travel Company in the 2024 Newsweek Readers’ Choice Awards contest. This award recognizes AdventureWomen’s long-time commitment to excellence.

“We value our guests above all else,” says Paige Davis, President of AdventureWomen. “So it’s even more meaningful to receive this award which is voted on by the very women who choose to travel with us.”

AdventureWomen was founded over 40 years ago by a true pioneer named Susan Eckert, and then changed hands in 2016 to travel industry icon Judi Wineland along with daughters Nicole and Erica.

AdventureWomen offers a diverse array of travel experiences tailored specifically for women, from thrilling outdoor adventures to culturally immersive trips. The company’s itineraries are carefully designed to foster camaraderie, personal growth, and unforgettable memories.

In addition to receiving the prestigious Newsweek award, AdventureWomen continues to innovate in the travel industry with new, exciting destinations and unique experiences. The company’s commitment to supporting local communities further distinguishes it as a leader in women’s travel.

“We are incredibly proud of our team and grateful to our travelers for their ongoing support and trust in us,” adds Davis. “This award is a testament to our dedication to providing exceptional travel experiences that inspire and uplift women.”

Help us support all the women-owned and operated businesses this International Women’s Day, March 8!

AdventureWomen, a women-owned and operated small group travel company, was founded out of a passion for showing women the transformational power of travel; the ways in which our relationships with our fellow travelers evolve; how our worldview changes; and how our empathy and understanding of other cultures expands and deepens. The women-to-women touch points included in our itineraries are one way we hope our guests can bridge cultural boundaries and find “common cause” with women living a world away.

Here are a few of the local women we support on our trips.

MOROCCO

Our groups in Morocco meet the women who are part of Cherry Buttons Cooperative. Culturally, the Cherry Buttons Cooperative broke new ground in traditionally male-dominated business environment, allowing women for the first time to negotiate the price of their products, determine the value of their labor, and manage a growing enterprise.

TANZANIA

In Tanzania, our groups visit the Enjipai Women’s Group. “Enjipai” means happiness in the old Maasai language and the objective of the group is to help improve the living conditions of the Maasai community in Tanzania, particularly among women, by showcasing their authentic and unique, hand-crafted jewelry, leatherwork and accessories. Every piece of their work is one of a kind and tells a story about the artist.

JAPAN

During a lunch in Japan, our groups are joined by a Maiko, an apprentice Geisha! Adorned in vibrant and elaborate attire, these women master various traditional Japanese arts. This extraordinary encounter is rare, as most introductions to Geishas occur solely through personal connections.

PERU

In Peru, AdventureWomen meet with a female founder of the Aquelarre (The Coven). The Coven is a brand of botanical brews of herbal potions and magic teas. Our group steps into her cozy home and learns how each extraordinary plant is chosen based on a blend of scientific knowledge and ancestral traditions. Together, our group crafts a sacred smudge stick, channeling healing energies and positive intentions.
